The varietal Bernardina was first discovered in 2013 when Ruperto, the Farm Manager noticed peculiar trees growing in the farm. He tasted the cherries, and the flavor was really distinct and noticeably complex. The Pacas family also noticed an overwhelming smell of fruits from the freshly pulped cherries. They then contacted a specialist lab in Italy to do a DNA test and the results showed that the coffee did not correspond to any documented coffee variety. This meant that a new variety had been discovered!
The family were given the honor of naming the new variety. They decided that the only way to go was to recognise the person who had pointed out the trees in the first place. It was thus named after the Farm Manager, Ruperto Bernardino Merche, who had made the initial discovery.
Do note that the coffee will be dispatched in whole beans only, unless stated otherwise.
