The Pa-O tribe of Myanmar is a beautiful people group with a tumultuous history. For years they have been tucked away in mist-covered mountains, unknown by most of the outside world. They have not had access to sustainable income or opportunity that brings hope. Opportunity and hope are precisely what Behind the Leaf aim to provide. Behind the Leaf Coffee is only a small part of what they do among the Pa-O. Lilypad Co., Ltd., the parent company to Behind the Leaf Coffee, was established in 2006 to provide business solutions to benefit the community. Lilypad develops low-cost, reproducible technologies in the areas of water, sanitation, agriculture and building. Their projects include ceramic water filters, interlocking compressed earth blocks, natural farming, Moringa, rabbits and stink-free pigs in addition to coffee.
Led by Melanie Edwards and her dedicated team, Behind the Leaf provide business solutions to benefit the community of Pa-O, working closely with individual Pa-O farmers to resurrect their coffee farms and harvest at peak periods. They train these coffee farmers on how to manage their coffee trees and instill a sense of pride in them by introducing their coffees to the world.
